The boys from the Q litter are a bit over a year old. I was lazy and did absolutely nearly nothing with them as far as formal training. I am now working with them on the object guard, because it's my favorite exercise and I can put the basket/gas can where ever and go to work. Some interesting things to point out. I am using pretty delicious ribeye fat from waste at work. I have put it in a bowl since day one, and since day one, have watched the boys try something, then if it didn't work, run to their crates. Their focus is really really heavy on the food bowl. So, food bowl distraction, they were super super excited about the food going into the basket, and so I did go from there to the gas can early, because between the bowl, and the food, their age (13 months) getting them to think about putting their feet in the basket seemed a bit much to ask. 5 training sessions in, and today was still eh. It has become obvious the bowl is way to much of a distraction. I am getting hopping and sitting and more hopping and them trying to claw the bowl out of my hands and barely any attention to the task at hand, the gas can. My plan is to get rid of the bowl, go back to the basket and alternate basket, can, basket, can and just cheat my way to feet in the basket. I should have started this at 3 months. If anyone reads this, don't wait. Start this early, because it is a lot like heeling, it takes quite a while, and is kinda easy to get the dog a bit messed up, and have to fix things.
