I loved watching people work dogs since forever. There are people I have worked with who could make a dog switch from one drive to the next, could point out where a dog was getting more confident, because they were not going into defense, but intense prey drive. They got a dog into drive during foundation work rewarded with a bite, and by running away. There was none of this buy a suit, work dogs for money like we have now. Thanks to an incredible shortage of people willing to work dogs, the bar for what is acceptable has dropped way way down. Part of it is how this new generation has been brought up. The numbers of people in dog sport are dropping last I heard, but it's always been that way. I often wonder if we brought in more of the off breed people, we would get more people working dogs and a higher quality over all of work. The dog sports are incredibly hard logistically, and sadly, often attract personalities that create an atmosphere that regular dog people do not want to be in. I know in my area, dog sport people are quite toxic.
